Pilot Dogs is seeking a Guide Dog Mobility Instructor (GDMI) to join our team. GDMI’s at Pilot Dogs are responsible for training guide dogs, working with the matching committee to match dogs to prospective students, conducting classes to certify guide dog teams, and providing aftercare services. In addition, all GDMI’s are responsible for guide dog assessments, re-homing/re-careering dogs, and overseeing health care for all dogs in Advanced Training. GDMI’s will take part in public relations, educational and fund-raising opportunities. GDMI’s are required at times to train other staff. GDMI’s are responsible for daily grooming, monitoring the mental and physical well-being of their dogs, and working with veterinary staff to ensure best care of the dogs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Overseeing the welfare of advanced training dogs
  • Training dogs from intake into advanced Training to placement with students
  • Conducting classes to train Pilot Dog Students on how to work their new guide dog.
  • Giving information about guide dog mobility, assessing applicants, and providing supportive services to guide dog teams
  • Training and working closely with volunteers
  • Assisting with facility and vehicle upkeep, clerical work, fundraising and public relations

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES)

  • Must hold a Guide Dog Mobility Certification issued by an IGDF accredited school
  • Possess empathy, and appropriate knowledge, coaching, and teaching skills for people with visual impairments
  • Strong guide dog assessment, training, husbandry and handling skills, with a proven track record of success.
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, and basic computer skills.
  • Experience with basic office equipment and all guide dog training and husbandry equipment.
  • Must be able to work independently and in a team environment
  • Must possess a high standard of integrity and work ethic
  • Must be able to handle emotional, and at times difficult interpersonal situations appropriately, as well as to deal with a variety of lifestyles and personalities.
  • Cooperates and works together with all co-workers; plan and complete job duties with minimal supervision direction, including appropriate judgment
  • Must have strong communication, and presentation skills
  • Must hold valid Drivers License
