Apprenticeship - Puppy Raising Supervisor


An exciting opportunity has arisen to join us as an Apprentice on the Puppy Raising Supervisor Programme for Dublin.

Our Puppy Raising Programme, where our dogs are trained in the home by volunteers, is a vital step in the training of a Guide dog or an Assistance dog. It is a structured training programme which is supported directly by a team of experienced Puppy Raising Supervisors.


About the role

The 12 month apprenticeship program will be based in both Cork (apprx. 50% of time) and Dublin. Reporting to the Early Training Team Supervisor, on qualification the successful candidate will be based full time in Dublin. We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated individual with relevant experience and academic qualifications.

About us

Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind is a National charity (established in 1976) which provides Guide Dogs for persons who are vision impaired and Assistance Dogs for families of children with autism in addition to a range of services which enable improved mobility and independent living for vision impaired persons of all ages.

We are recognised at home and abroad for the quality of our dogs. We breed and train over 140 dogs each year, this is only possible through the commitment and hard work of our staff and volunteers and the support of the public.


About the You

You should be a highly flexible self-starter who loves dogs and excels in communicating with people. Your eexperience in dog training and behaviour modification will give you the leading edge for this role.


Ideally you should have a background of working in the service dog industry with either a guide dog trainer or guide dog mobility instructor qualification. Excellent IT skills and a genuine talent for effective communication are essential.  








Key Responsibilities


  • Role involves practical hands on support and instruction to approximately 45 volunteers who are training a puppy for up to 14 months in their own home.
  • The apprenticeship program will provide training and development in the areas of

(1)      Guide Dog Training

(2)      Volunteer management

(3)      Administration of a Puppy Raising Scheme


  • The apprenticeship will be for a duration of 12 months. Up to 50% of time during the first year will be based at Irish Guide Dogs HQ and Training Centre in Cork, with the remainder of the time being based in Dublin.
  • This apprenticeship is a combination of on-the-job and desk based learning.
    • A Full clean driving licence is required.
    • Company Vehicle, laptop, phone and office set up are provided
